Louboutain’s red soles were given a lift in court Monday when Tiffany & Co filed an amicus curae. The legal move set about to clarify Tiffany’s position in relation to the trademark held for its signature blue packaging. Although Tiffany’s 1998 trademark of packaging color is different to the case Louboutain filed against Yves Saint Laurent that concerns product configuration, the action has left the plaintiffs feeling well flushed with support.

“Last, a brief word about this month’s fashion,” writes Vogue editor in chief Ann Wintour in her editor’s letter from the August 2011 “age issue.” She concludes that fashion is an endeavor teeming with surprise (see also Céline Resort 2012 and Givenchy Resort 2012). The previous three paragraphs of this opening letter, however deal with the aged, specifically the issue’s Sarah Jessica Parker cover story. The fashion that remains in the 229 page issue has value and none more so than an accessories story featuring Ford’s Anais Mali photographed by Raymond Meier. Titled “Mixed Media” the Elissa Santisi-styled story makes exceptional use of bold background colors to accentuate accessories in Lucite, alligator and python, glitter and suede. Making her fifth appearance for Vogue this year Anais opens the story with a Tod’s pochette bag slung over her left shoulder and wearing an alligator-and-python belt and clothing by The Row. Although there is nary an Azzedine Alaïa snakeskin handbag to be found, the story’s accessories on the balance are used to maximum effect. For example, take Anais’s final look, which is comprised of an amber python purse that absolutely pops against the green python dress and T-strap platform sandals, all by Gucci. Exceptionally blown-out hair by Kamo completes this trip down retro lane, which as ever Anais Mali takes in stride in both defiance of the issue’s theme of age and of course restrictions of the two-dimensional page.

The consensus about yesterday’s Evandro Soldati video for W by Santiago Sierra was a collective sproing! that tickled our Facebook Wall and caressed our Twitter mentions. Such is the captivating power of the 6’2″ (188 cm) Brazilian that he returns to this page for a print encore in the form of a Details August 2011 editorial by photographer Robbie Fimmano. Titled “The Change-Up,” the Benjamin Sturgill-styled story adopts a familiar didactic tone that is germane to men’s magazines of this sort. “Ten ways to tweak your wardrobe for a look that sets you apart this fall” announces the feature’s opening page. To that end, bold stripes, graphic sweatshirts, wide trousers, etc and so on are presented as wardrobe suggestions to what surely is a predominately straight male readership. The lesson could not be better delivered than by Evandro who for his third look wears a Burberry Prorsum sweater, Hermès T-shirt, Dior Homme wide trousers, Marc Jacobs belt, and Dries Van Noten shoes. To be sure these are looks for autumn and as such are a far cry from the cruel summer nothings of yesterday, but in both cases it is Evandro Soldati who drives home the message that makes our audience go sproing!

And finally, freedom, specifically Tar 5 Spring 2011 that takes the concept as its point of departure for such disparate contributors as the recently-freed Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei, Moroccan psychiatrist Rita El Khayat, and Centre Pompidou curator Christine Marcel. Oh, but Tar 5 is not only art and politics, nay, it also comes good with the fashion by way of an editorial by photographer Leonora Hamill and stylist Haria Norsa that features Ford’s Hannelore Knuts. Titled “Holy Hannelore” the story sees the iconic Belgian at her resplendent best beginning bedside wearing a Trussardi dress, bracelet with pendants by Brioni, golden bracelet by Sharra Pagano, and holding a Fendi clutch. She is breathtaking in particular for her fourth look, a white Yves Saint Laurent dress, Salvatore Ferragamo heels, Vhernier rings and earrings, and holding a Stella McCartney clutch, which allows her to especially stand out from her luscious surroundings. Not that Hannelore Knuts could ever be consumed by any backdrop no matter how busily it pursues its freedom for this Tar 5 freedom issue…she wouldn’t otherwise be known as Ultramegalore!

Tracking down every last fall campaign in which Ford talent features is not unlike assembling a Panini World Cup sticker album. Collecting the stickers can be well tedious compared to actually watching Lionel Messi tear defenses asunder. The same holds for cataloguing fall campaigns, which in the fashion mind tend to congeal into one solid glossy mass by the time the shows begin in September. That said, some campaigns and models filter to the top and also wind up on this page like Ford Men’s Adrien Sahores and Francisco Lachowski for the Dsquared² F/W 11 campaign by Mert & Marcus have today. If you bought V72 last Thursday (and if not, then you should still, buy it now!), then you will have noticed the gorgeous black & white campaign Dsquared² in the opening pages of the issue a page after the Hugo Boss campaign and one before the Belvedere Vodka advert. Adrien closed the Dsquared² P/E 2012 show last month in Milano and together with the Brazilian are arguably two of the shrewdest advertising bookings today. No other male models prompt the sort of enthusiasm that Adrien Sahores and Francisco Lachowski generate, which once again is akin to the sort of fanaticism prompted by Lionel Messi. Come to think of it, there can be some enjoyment yet in highlighting campaigns just as there too is something deeply satisfying about completing a Panini album.

Last week photographer Santiago Sierra‘s work surfaced on this page in the form of that excellent Luciana Curtis Elle México cover story. Although his work is relatively new to this page, he has a long since established his name in the industry as the go-to auteur for fine moving imagery. His CV, which includes having worked with Mert & Marcus, Inez & Vinoodh, and other leading photographers, describes exactly the sort of heady matrix in which his visual sensibilities developed. Sierra’s still photography is no doubt accomplished, but it is in moving pictures where he has truly excelled. Take for example his latest video “Cruel Summer” starring Ford Men’s Evandro Soldati and Marloes Horst (Next), which was featured on Wmagazine.com the other week. Having absolutely nothing to do with its Bananarama namesake, this slow motion study in all that is equally desirous and nearly unattainable from swimwear to six packs yields a potent blend of pleasure and frustration or, in other words, the base ingredients of any “cruel summer.”

What would summer be without reruns? In a word, cruel. That could well be a motivating thought behind the decision by Vogue Portugal’s editor in chief Paula Mateus to reprint Karmen Pedaru‘s Cédric Buchet editorial from Vogue Paris juin / juilett 2011 as her magazine’s August 2011 cover story. As much as readers would no doubt appreciate a new Karmen Pedaru cover story I reckon few will disparage this particular reprint, which counts as the Estonian’s first ever for the storied Condé Nast franchise. If you can’t catch A Super Máquina on TV this summer, then you certainly could do worse than cop Karmen Pedaru’s Vogue Portugal cover issue.
