Valerija Kelava & Ming Xi | Vogue China Feb. 2011 by Damien Neva

Of all the goods that come from the great People’s Republic, from the ubiquitous, nearly everything touching your skin at this very moment, to the extremely rare, terbium, dysprosium, yttrium, thulium, and lutetium, Vogue China has to be this page’s favorite. It is easily the priciest Condé Nast glossy on offer in North America, $34.95 at our West Village newsstand, but consistently boasts many of the the better editorials. Take, for example, the Vogue China February 2011 editorial featuring Ford’s Valerija Kelava and Ming Xi by photographer Daniel Jackson and fashion editor Tiina Laakonen. Titled “Handsome Woman” the story trains a wide lens on two of the hottest models of the moment from Paul Rowland‘s image board. Dressed in a variety of predominately black and white menswear looks (e.g., Tom Ford, look #6) the two exude a sexiness that sizzles from the sheer tension between the styling and the strong red lip and porcelain-like finish created by makeup artist Petros Petrohilos. Minimal staging by set designer Bryn Bowen makes clever use of mirrors and black lacquered surfaces, which in turn saves the story from becoming yet another white cyc studio shoot. Handsome, yes. Women, definitely!
