Ethan James Interview Special by Damien Neva

When I requested an interview with Ford Men’s Ethan James it was with the knowledge that it would be on the same day that he was flying in from Paris. Not sure about you, but there’s at least a couple dozen things I’d rather do after an eight hour trans-Atlantic flight than speak on camera to the Ford Models Blog. Undaunted by the prospect of facing the agency’s in-house hack, Ethan, ever the consummate professional, duly accepted the interview request and answered with aplomb all that was asked of him. Chief of interest to me were his working relationship with Dior Homme‘s Kris Van Assche as well as the recent Interview editorial by Mikael Jansson and Karl Templer.

The Grand Rapids, Michigan native signed with Ford Men when he was seventeen-years-old and spent a couple years developing on the board in relative obscurity. Ethan has since grown into his own after living in New York for a couple years, which he admits has done him a world. A couple weeks shy of his twenty-first birthday Ethan is brimming with confidence and eager for all that lies ahead in his developing career, which in the last year has started to ignite. In June 2010 Ethan opened for Dior Homme S/S 11 and just last month closed its F/W 11 presentation. His association to with the minimalist menswear line also has extended into an editorial cover story for L’Officiel Homme China.

The Interview story has also been a major development for Ethan, who during my interview betrayed a hint of surprise that he features as prominently in the story as he does. During the first half of the shoot Ethan was mostly situated in the background of the steamy set, but during the second half of the shoot photographer Mikael Jansson moved him to the fore. Thankfully for Ethan the shots from the second half of the shoot went to press and judging by their strength it’s not surprising they were winners. Judge for yourself, but I reckon he steals the show.

Beyond modeling Ethan enjoys photography and counts Sarah Moon amongst his favorites not least for the other-worldliness of her fine art portraiture. As an early teenager Ethan was given his grandfather’s 35mm Miranda, which he used to take portraits of friends and some of the more model-like girls in his high school. When Ethan joined the Ford Men he actually tested a few models on the women’s board. As his career has taken off Ethan hasn’t had nearly as much time to devote to his own photography, but is eager to return to the craft. Given all Ethan has experienced on photo sets in last year we look forward to his work. In the mean time, however we will continue to enjoy his blossoming modeling career.
