Ethan James | Vogue Paris Mars 2011 by Damien Neva

Vogue Paris, that editorial playground for the Crystals and Karmens of the world, traditionally isn’t given over to using boys in its stories. When it does, they’re typically garnishing for the female subjects. Occasionally, however they are cast in more substantive roles that actually carry with them styling credits. Such is the case for Ford Men’s Ethan James in a story by photographer Mikael Jansson and fashion editor Giovanna Battaglia that appears in the final issue of Vogue Paris edited by Carine Roitfeld. Titled “Audace Manifeste” or “bold manifesto” en français the jeweled accessories story extends a surrealist theme established by the issue’s preceding feature on Salvador Dali by Catherine Millet. The reader could be forgiven for not immediately noticing Ethan who is nestled comfortably below a supine Missy Rayder‘s exposed “peaks” and is shown to be wearing a yellow gold bracelet by Keiselstein-Chord, a rose gold watch by Jaeger LeCoultre, and an emerald ring set in yellow gold by Solange Azagury-Partridge. All the same Ethan acquits himself well under the circumstances, which I hope haven’t resulted in a permanent state of right-handed obdormition.

This story marks a reunion between Ethan and the production ensemble behind the excellent Interview February 2011 story titled “Bare” that included Mikael Jansson, hair stylist Eugene Souleiman, makeup artist Mark Carrasquillo, and set designer Stefan Beckman. As far as reunions go it is not bad company for Ethan to keep and I for one hope to see a similar reunion happen again very soon. In the mean time please have a look at the interview special I did with Ethan James last month.
