The email arrived a little after 4 AM on the Sunday during the week of the Paris shows — routine daily show confirmations. I skimmed the list, made notes, and then paused to reread the names underneath the all caps GIVENCHY heading. Karmen, yes, Tayane, yes, Valerija, yes, Lydia (exc.)…Lydia…hang on a minute, Lydia? Who was that? An email exchange ensued and I was told to keep an eye out for look #37, a redhead. By the time the show images surfaced there indeed was a bespectacled redhead wearing look #37, but what was her story? Meet Lydia Willemina Collins, 19-year-old Sydney, Australia native who walked exclusively in Paris for the Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci F/W 11 womenswear presentation. As far as runway debuts go there are hardly any more auspicious than for Givenchy, which is a point not lost on the young model who is enjoying every minute of her promising new career.
Fresh on the heels of Paris, Lydia’s time in New York has been brief and well busy. Simply finding time to shoot this spot for the Ford Models Blog proved daunting and had to be reconciled with another two photo shoots on the same day. If the pace of work has been breakneck, then Lydia hasn’t betrayed the slightest sign of stress through it all. This relatively carefree approach could have something to do with fortuitous manner of Lydia’s discovery. Riding a Sydney train on her way to work Lydia was discovered by her now mother agent who was on her way to a Kylie Minogue concert. Although Lydia doesn’t much fancy Minogue’s music, it is clear that the 2004 Grammy winner at least indirectly hastened Lydia’s entry into the world of fashion modeling. The rest of Lydia’s success, however is all her own and having joined Paul Rowland‘s board she couldn’t be better placed to succeed.
Lydia will go back to Sydney for a couple weeks and is slated for a New York return in April. In the mean time be sure to review her latest video and digitals as well as the official Ford portfolio of Lydia Willemina Collins.
