Strictly speaking, this page flies in the face of chronology. I am not bothered in the slighted by the fact that Monday I posted a Vogue China story from the April issue and today I am returning to the March issue. The sheer volume of editorials coursing through the agency necessitates a modicum of temporal flexibility. So long as that gefauxlogical formation of periodicals on the surface of my desk is called Magazine Mountain and not Magazine Mesa, then, well…oh, you get the point. Labored metaphors aside, I would like to revisit Vogue China March 2011 as it has a story well worth mentioning — “Glamour Returns” by photographer Max Vadukul featuring Ming Xi, Hyoni Kang, and Tao Okamoto.
With each successive $30 issue purchased, I am more impressed by Vogue China and its knack for drawing exceptional creatives to its many, many pages and none more so than for what has become the requisite magazine story of the season. Yes, I’m talking about the “Tom Ford story.” Since making a triumphal return to womenswear having spent six years in its wilderness, Tom Ford has done the editorial rounds of every major publication including a guest editorial spot for Vogue Paris. For this feature in Vogue China, Ming, Hyoni, and Tao hasten glamour’s return by modeling looks from the collection privately shown last September in New York. Silver paillette jacket…leopard-print suit with plunge-neck blouse…black leather jacket with with exaggerated gold zipper…glamour in other words, the variety to which I don’t mind making a return.
