In 2010, the United States Virgin Islands Department of Tourism appropriated $650K to advertise the uniqueness of St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix in an effort to ultimately increase visitor expenditures to these islands.¹ To that end, the DOT has done a variety of things from targeting travel agents to even establishing a partnership with NASCAR. So far as fashion is concerned, the DOT has played a not insignificant role in partially underwriting some major editorials not least of which includes a beauty story in Vogue China May 2011 by Daniel Jackson featuring Ford’s Ming Xi. Now that is a brilliant way to spend those DOT dollars! This Tiina Laakonen-styled story uses the white beaches of the Caneel Bay Hotel and Resort in St. John as an inviting backdrop to emphasize the vintage hair styling by Esther Langham. The illustrious hair coupled with Ming’s seductive poses reconfigure vintage as thoroughly now and that is now as in leave your office now and get to the beach! Having spoken with the story’s local producer, Ingrid Ott-Zucker at Ottworks, I have come to understand that there will be a forthcoming fashion story from this same shoot. Until that story is published, the below pictures of Ming Xi should sufficiently whet your appetite in a way that sifting through a 603 page budget proposal never quite could.
