Aiden Andrews | VMAN 22 Summer 2011 by Damien Neva

Fashion loves May 1968, otherwise known as mai 68, the period in which a general strike combined with student unrest effectively precipitated the collapse of then president Charles de Gaulle‘s government in France. Without cataloguing the well-catalogued events — film, literature, scholarship already have done it to romantic death — or languidly opening with the usual longwinded, bourgeois soft introduction, I’ll cut to the chase and say Ford Men’s Aiden Andrews features in VMAN 22 Summer 2011 in a story called “Before the Fall” photographed by Sharif Hamza and styled by Jay Massacret. The opening page acknowledges the militaristic stylings of the coming fall menswear collections, but credits rebellion and social upheaval as the bonafide inspirations for the autumn looks. Although there’s nothing distinctively Tunisian, Egyptian, or even Syrian about these looks, nevertheless they are undeniably contemporary and, yes, a touch rebellious, especially when flanked by the arch in Washington Square Park (see also that Beastie Boys portrait by Glen E. Friedman). Aiden’s third look, which is comprised of a jacket, shirt, and trousers by Prada, turtleneck by Tim Coppens, and helmet by Yakkay, announces at once a refusal to be cowed by oppressive anti-helmet forces present in society. The story goes out with a riotous bang with Aiden wearing a sweater by 3.1 Phillip Lim, Prada shirt, Levi’s jeans, Louis Vuitton belt, Falke socks, and shoes and gloves by Marc Jacobs. And that’s “Before the Fall,” which puts the chic in all that global unrest that could not give a jot about fashion, but nevertheless captivates magazine editors and designers alike.
