Nearly a year ago photographer Richard Burbridge‘s “War Heroes” story featuring Ford Men’s Aiden Andrews appeared in Dazed & Confused. Aiden and the story’s other models were rendered all but unrecognizable through the makeup nous of Peter Phillips that turned otherwise top models into artfully grizzled veterans of war. In Dazed & Confused June 2011, however Burbridge brings this delightful strain model obfuscation full circle with a little help from Italian artist Maurizio Anzeri whose needle & thread treatment of Ford Men’s Sen Mitsuji is nothing short of extraordinary. Anzeri, whose artwork is sold through Monica De Cardena in Milan, Saatchi in London, and Galerie Rupert Pfab in Düsseldorf, is known for his work that involves directly sewing onto found vintage photographs, the results of which include both intricate beauty and exquisite disfigurement. In “It Came from the Sky,” Sen’s story-opening portrait is no exception and underneath all that thread he is shown wearing a top and cardigan by Missoni. This excellent story is but one waypoint in an ambitious issue dedicated to global activism that also features Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei in a cover story interview five days before his arrest by Chinese authorities for alleged tax evasion.
