To evolutionary biologists and theoretical physicists, a week isn’t a terribly significant unit of time. For teenage trends and fashion, however a week might as well be an epoch. How many readers remember that comedic admission by the silver-haired CNN talking head that he was once a child model with the Ford Kids division? OK, wait, several readers remember that…in fact, the context of that self deprecating aside, the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards a week ago Monday, was quite a memorable occasion. On the night, the annual awards gala by the Council of Fashion Designer of America not only produced winners, but also no insignificant amount of creative collateral. The collateral about which I am talking are of course the portraits from the CFDA Fashion Awards Journal 2011 by creative director Trey Laird and photographers Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin that features Ford’s Alana Zimmer and Ford Men’s Christian Brylle and Paolo Anchisi. The signature black & white portraits make the glittery embossed journal more a luscious photography album than a playbill destined to share the auditorium floor with the popcorn tubs and fountain soda jugs following almost any other evening’s final curtain. For the below portraits Alana wears an ensemble by The Row by Mary-Kate Olsen & Ashley Olsen, Christian wears Robert Geller, and Paolo Phillip Lim. Christian’s designer, German-born Robert Geller, was ultimately the Swarovksi Award for Menswear winner. But, more than a week after the festivities it is these excellent portraits that make winners of the rest of us in the wider fashion community.
