Valerija Kelava | LOVE Issue 5 Spring / Summer 2011 by Damien Neva

With full-time having yet to be called on Spring / Summer 2011 biannual issues, I would like to take a look at one Condé Nast edition that has been patiently biding its time on Magazine Mountain. Yes, it’s that British volume, whose title is written all shouty-like so that it reads LOVE. Amongst several editorials contained in the fifth issue of LOVE is a story by photographer Alasdair McLellan featuring Ford’s Valerija Kelava. Titled “Nonstop Erotic Dancing,” the Olivier Rizzo-styled story situates the ck one Fragrance, Jil Sander Navy, Aquascutum, and Diesel Black Gold S/S 11 campaign model on a stage more commonly associated with districts red light than theatre. As ever with LOVE, there is a twist, which comes in the form of gender ambiguity that is championed throughout the self-described “Androgyny Issue.” “Glamour, flamboyance, decadence; hair, clothes, and make-up, all exaggerated and souffléd up to a rousing crescendo of excess,” writes LOVE editor in chief Katie Grand, “creating a glorious sense of artifice that entrances the beholder so much more profoundly than the mundane matter of the gender of the person beneath it all.” To that end, Valerija first appears in the story clasping her hands, Antony Turner-styled hair slicked back, and wearing a Prada suit. The styling relaxes considerably for the final three shots wherein Valerija wears little more than a silk skirt by Dolce & Gabbana. And with that, color me entranced, Miss Grand!

Valerija Kelava & Janice Alida | AnOther Magazine S/S 2011 by Damien Neva

High above the timberline of Magazine Mountain lie untold mysteries. With the spring thaw comes not only a torrent of fresh water, but also editorials that long ago should have featured on this page were it not for the glacial presence of the F/W 2011 show season. If there is one photographer whom should never be made to wait, then it is Paolo Roversi. Such is the strength of his work and its inimitable color that makes the decision to feature it on this page largely academic. The last time I spoke about Ravenna-born photographer, it was in relation to his Vogue Italia February 2011 story featuring Ford’s Valerija Kelava. At the time I suggested it wouldn’t be the last occasion the Slovenian would feature in one of his stories and I was not wrong. It so happens that Valerija along with Janice Alida feature in AnOther Magazine Spring / Summer 2011 photographed by Paolo Roversi. Styled by Olivier Rizzo the story dresses Valerija and Janice in a number of looks comprised of torpedo bras from Andy’s Chee-Pees, dyed cotton knickers throughout by Petit Beateau, stockings throughout by Grandicalze, various corsets, and the odd straw hat by Marc Jacobs. This story is at turns luxurious, decadent, and wholly “all undressed and nowhere to go” in its execution. The frequency of Paolo Rovers-Valerija Kelava stories shows no sign of flagging and I reckon there has to be another story in the offing. In fact, I think I know right where to look… .

Aiden Andrews for Raf Simons F/W 10 by Damien Neva

Ford Men’s golden boy Aiden Andrews bags another F/W 10 campaign and this time for Raf Simons. The connections between designer, photographer, fashion editor, makeup, hair and model that crisscross this campaign alone are dizzying. Raf Simons of course designs his own line as well as the menswear and womenswear lines for Jil Sander. For the Raf Simons F/W 10 campaign photographer Willy Vanderperre takes to the helm along with fashion editor Olivier Rizzo, hair stylist Paul Hanlon, and makeup artist Peter Philips all previously having done the past and present campaigns for Jil Sander for which Aiden Andrews is also the current face. Clearly at this point they are family, an observation which is further evidenced in this fine video treatment by Willy Vanderperre for the Raf Simons F/W 10 campaign. Who else but family could get Aiden to do that with his hands for an entire shoot?
